A new study just reveled that the Washington State and Oregon coastlines are part of a huge previously unknown fault line. This fault line is more likely to produce a huge 8-9.0 earthquake then anyplace else in the world. When I read the article from the New Yorker website, it was alarming to say the least. I always thought we lived in one of the safest places in the world..no tornadoes, hurricanes, or earthquakes. Well, now we have earthquakes, and the worst kind..absolutely huge! These are a few things I was worried about when reading this.

    "DON'T WORRY-WE ARE FAR AWAY"

Yes, we are far from the coast but not that far. The last time these faults created an earthquake, most of the damage was east of the cascades. There were bad mud slides and the Columbia was temporarily blocked.

    DAMS ARE EVERYWHERE

It is probably not even a real danger but there is a ton of water being held back by hydro power in the northwest. Maybe that scene from Superman where Hoover dam is just stuck in my head but that scenario scares me. there aren't many places to hide from a huge wall of water.

    THE COAST SUPPLIES US

If there is a huge natural disaster like the one described in the article, we will be cut of from our main source of supply for food. It would not be immediate, but it would be a long lasting impact we would feel until everything gets rebuilt. Also farmers use the coast to ship their crops out of the northwest, and that would be stopped completely.

WE ALL HAVE FAMILY ON THE COAST

When something like a 9.0 earthquake happens, it is your family that is most important. I think most all of us have some family or friends that live near the coast. If a huge 9.0 quake happens, most of them are in great danger and a lot will die.
