Today, at Fort Worden State Park, in the city of Port Townshend, you'll enjoy cottages, restaurants, and several campsites. Some are in the trees of the forest, some are on the beach, and some are in very primitive areas on the grounds.

The Fort was built in 1889 and the first buildings were constructed in 1902. It had turned into a small city. The base shut down in 1953 after it was purchased by the state to be a treatment facility for "troubled youth" until the 70s.

Maybe it's because of the onsite military cemetery, the jail, or the rumor of a soldier taking his life. Hikers report that moaning is heard when walking through the hallways of the barracks. People also report smelling burning coal, sulfur, and rubber on the grounds.

Fort Worden is also known to host weddings, meetings, and conferences.

It's been dubbed the "Paris of the Pacific Northwest" by Sunset Magazine.

The Fort features 73 historic buildings with four museums and creative spaces for art and educational programs, yoga, woodworking, and more. Eagle-eyed observers will recognize the Fort as the filming location for "An Officer And A Gentleman."
