A new law takes effect today in Washington State and it's got some folks frustrated.

I can agree that it doesn't make a lot of sense because I personally think cyclists need to adhere to the rules of the road like a motorist but maybe there is a good reason behind the new law.

I'm not an avid bicyclist so there must be a reason for the law so let's discuss.

We also have a poll for you to take to let us know how you feel about the new law.

So effective October 1, 2020 bicyclists are exempt from coming to a complete stop at stop signs as detailed in RCW 46.61.190.
A new study from the Department Of Seattle explains the benefits of the "Safety Stop Law"
"The study found that cities with Safety Stop laws had 14.5% fewer bicycle injuries one year after adoption, and 30.4% better overall bicycle safety than similar cities.
Oregon has already passed a similar law in 2019 and other states have followed through on passing similar laws.

The Benton County Sheriff's Department posted a clarification on the new law:

This exemption does not give bicyclists the right to disregard traffic. You are still required to yield to other traffic at an intersection with a stop sign. Bicyclists are still required to come to a complete stop for school bus stop signs or for railroad crossings.
So take our Poll - Let us know if you agree or disagree with the new law and we'll share the results tomorrow on the morning show.
