Orcas Bay Neighborhood Starts Its Own Internet Company

The San Juan Islands don't get great Internet service. The neighborhood of Doe Bay on Orcas Island was really frustrated with its service... and then it experienced a 10-day outage.

People who live on Orcas Island (less than 6,000) are really self-sufficient. Knowing no company would make the investment to help them, they formed their own company!

They purchased satellites and installed them at the top of the water tower. Then they used drones to test different trees and hills for good transmission to the water tower. Then they installed transmitters in the trees and have been able to hook up about 50 homes over the past two years giving everyone about 30 mbps!
