As we mourn the death of Kittitas County Sheriff Deputy Ryan Thompson, husband and father of 3, and pray for the speedy and full recovery for officer Benito Chavez, I am amazed to find out that their office has not had a fatal officer-involved shooting in 92 years.

Maybe now you'll understand why officers have their hand on their gun when they approach your vehicle. They don't know who you are. They don't know your intentions. They don't know if you're fleeing the scene of a crime or accidentally speeding on your way to the store. They don't know your thoughts. They don't know your like or dislike of police. They don't know if they'll go home tonight or to the morgue.

So the next time a cop speaks to you harshly or seems a little unfriendly or  "all business," give 'em a break.
