Kennewick Police's "Operation Clean Sweep" is underway and this is no small task. Gang-related crime has been on the rise lately and enough is enough. Several drive-by shootings occurred in a short period of time and then a 20-year-old pregnant woman was shot in the street and left to die over a week ago.

So this past Monday, local officers and detectives teamed with the DEA, FBI, U.S. Marshals and Homeland Security (76 agents from 20 agencies in all) to hunt and arrest gang members.

They targeted 51 people with previous warrants in a single night. Several arrests were made and more than 30 gang members targeted by the agencies are now on the run and being hunted.

Kudos to KPD and others for nipping this problem in the bud. Not a few people were becoming increasingly afraid to go out at night in our beautiful city. We have a right to feel safe and police are proactively targeting those who'd like us to feel otherwise.
