The local Red Cross of America is urging people who cannot afford smoke detectors to sign up for a free program which provides smoke detectors.

The Benton County Sheriffs Department hoping people take advantage of this program in wake of the tragic deaths of 2 children in Prosser last week and and the deaths of 2 other children who also died in a mobile home fire two years ago.

In both fires the children we're home alone in mobile homes that did not have working smoke detectors. Mobile homes are vulnerable to fires especially older models which have less safety features than newer mobile homes.

The Red Cross started a campaign in 2014 which provides Free smoke detectors to those who cannot afford them. The Program is called getasokealarm.org
