The Kennewick Police Department will take unwanted medications at the Police Station at 211 West 6th Avenue in Kennewick.

The Richland Police Department is also a take-back location at 871 George Washington Way.

And the West Richland Police Department will take back prescription drugs at 3805 West Van Giesen Street.

Many people become addicted to opioids after they get their first dose from someone's medicine cabinet? By getting these medications out of your home, you're helping to stop the cycle of addiction.

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million people misused prescription stimulants, and 5.9 million people misused prescription tranquilizers or sedatives in 2019.

The survey showed that the majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from friends and family.

If you have old, unwanted medications taking up space in your medicine cabinet, this is your day to get rid of them. Anything that's expired up to a year of their expiration date should be tossed.

You can find a location site here.

Medications should NEVER be flushed down the toilet.

If you can't get to a take-back location, you can safely dispose of the medications at home.

1. Remove the prescription pills from the original container.

2. Mix the drugs with something undesirable, such as kitty litter, or coffee grounds.

3. Place the mixture into a sealable plastic bag or container with a lid.

4. Make sure all your personal information on the prescription label is unreadable.

5. Place the contents in your trash.
