Authorities Report Spike in Area 911 ‘Prank Calls’

The Southeast Communications Center (SECOMM) is the 911 hub for Benton, Franklin and surrounding counties when it comes to emergencies and communicating with all police and Sheriff's Deputies.

Richland Police and others have issued a reminder-warning to citizens about a spike in 911 prank calls that have gone up since schools and other closures began with the COVID issue.

Richland Police and SECOMM officials said:

"Anytime a prank call is received, it takes away the opportunity for us to help a caller that has an actual emergency. We are asking that you talk to the children in your home and educate them on the importance of using 911 for true emergencies and that 911 is not a prank!

Children who know how to call 911 in an emergency could save a life. Teach your child how to appropriately call 911 and explain they should stay on the phone (if safe to do so) while the dispatcher obtains necessary information."
