Lucasfilm Committed to Rian Johnson’s New ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy Before He Even Had a Story
The first reviews of The Last Jedi are in, with many critics hailing the new Star Wars installment as the best since The Empire Strikes Back. And if critics are that impressed with filmmaker Rian Johnson’s work in the iconic galaxy far, far away, then the folks at Lucasfilm are twice as thrilled — which is why it wasn’t too surprising to learn that the studio had signed Johnson to develop a brand new Star Wars trilogy, complete with new characters and an epic new journey. What might surprise you, however, is that Lucasfilm gave Johnson the OK even though he didn’t have a story idea to pitch.
Louis C.K. Responds to Sexual Misconduct Allegations: ‘These Stories Are True’
In recent months, while promoting the release of his upcoming indie feature I Love You, Daddy, Louis C.K. has been asked about rumors of his sexual misconduct that have circulated for years. Given that some parts of his film eerily — and perhaps even brazenly — evoke those rumors, it’s a fair question, but one he has repeatedly dodged, refusing to validate those rumors by so much as acknowledging them. But after five women came forward with allegations about C.K.’s past sexual misconduct in the New York Times, the comedian has finally broken his silence in a heartfelt letter.
‘X-Men: The New Mutants’ Officially Begins Production
Comic-Con 2017 is right around the corner, and one of the films we’re hoping to see at the big 20th Century Fox panel in Hall H is The New Mutants, the studio’s next X-Men spinoff. We’re not banking on seeing any actual footage from the film itself, however, since it officially went into production today — as evidenced by a photo from director Josh Boone, who received a pretty funny gag gift to mark the occasion.
Ryan Gosling to Reunite With ‘La La Land’ Director for Neil Armstrong Biopic
After taking some time off to make his directorial debut and tend to his growing family, Ryan Gosling is back and busier than ever with recent roles in The Nice Guys and awards season favorite La La Land. While that film is currently in theaters (and picking up a few awards nominations), Gosling is already plotting a reunion with director Damien Chazelle for his next project, a Neil Armstrong biopic that will take the actor from the “City of Stars” to the actual stars — in outer space.
Johnny Depp Dethrones Adam Sandler as the Most Overpaid Actor in Hollywood
Last year, Forbes dubbed Adam Sandler the most overpaid actor in Hollywood with the help of some basic math skills — the publication looks at how much a studio makes for every dollar they paid their leading man. Johnny Depp came in second place in 2014, and although Sandler has had an impressively terrible year, Depp succeeded in overthrowing the former funny man and stealing his overpaid crown.
The ‘Star Wars: Episode 8’ Script Is So Good, J.J. Abrams Wishes He Were Directing It
J.J. Abrams revved up the engine on the ol’ Star Wars ship, launching the series on a new journey with The Force Awakens, but declining to return for the subsequent sequels. Instead, Rian Johnson (Looper) and Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) will be steering the franchise from here on out, directing Episodes 8 and 9, respectively. Johnson is in production on Episode 8 right now, and according to The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley, the script is “very good.” How good? Abrams regrets turning down the chance to direct it.
‘Batman vs. Superman’ Trailer Will Arrive Earlier Than Expected
Looks like Zack Snyder is trying to steal some of the spotlight from Disney and Lucasfilm. The director will reportedly reveal the first five seconds of the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer online just an hour before Star Wars Celebration begins on Thursday. Five seconds sounds pretty lame, which is why Snyder is offering fans a chance to see the entire trailer shortly after…in a theater. Sure, why not.
Harrison Ford Hospitalized Following Plane Crash in California
This is absolutely harrowing news: iconic actor and living legend Harrison Ford has been critically injured in a plane crash. The plane crash-landed in Venice, California today and Ford was subsequently rushed to the hospital where his condition is currently critical. Ford, who’s been reprising his role in the new series of Star Wars films and recently signed on for the long-gestating Blade Runner sequel, is 72 years old—making his enduring dedication to these franchises even more remarkable.
UPDATE: ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ Trailer Will Debut in Theaters Thanksgiving Weekend
There have been a lot of reports regarding the trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’ Just last week, news surfaced that Disney planned to attach the first teaser trailer to screenings of ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,’ which seemed to confirm an earlier rumor, while Disney reps said they had “bigger plans” for their official debut. And now another report has surfaced, claiming that we’ll see the first teaser in theaters as soon as this coming Thanksgiving week. Madness!
